Purpose of the Role
Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, the Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end design, implementation and administration of enterprise IT infrastructure solutions.
The role covers server and storage platforms, cloud environments, networking and cybersecurity controls across both on-premises and cloud-based systems.
The Infrastructure Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the stability, scalability and security of client and internal IT environments while supporting operational excellence, project delivery and continuous service improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement and maintain enterprise IT infrastructure, including servers, storage, virtualization and cloud platforms.
- Provide day-to-day operational support across infrastructure environments, ensuring high availability and performance.
- Monitor system performance, capacity and reliability and implement proactive improvements where required.
- Support the deployment and management of Microsoft enterprise platforms, including Windows Server, Microsoft 365 and Azure.
- Administer virtualization environments such as VMware and Hyper-V, as well as data centre infrastructure.
- Manage backup, disaster recovery and business continuity solutions across client environments.
- Implement and maintain cybersecurity controls, including endpoint protection, identity management and network security.
- Support network infrastructure, including LAN/WAN, routing, switching and SD-WAN environments.
- Participate in project delivery activities, including solution deployment, migration and upgrades.
- Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure-related incidents in line with agreed SLAs and escalation procedures.
- Maintain system documentation, operational procedures and configuration standards.
- Engage with vendors and technology partners for technical support, procurement and solution optimisation.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and operational governance practices.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline.
- Minimum 3–5+ years’ experience in IT infrastructure, system administration or technical support roles.
- Strong technical knowledge of:
- Server and storage systems
- Virtualization platforms such as VMware and Hyper-V
- Microsoft enterprise environments, including Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365 and Azure
- Networking fundamentals, including routing, switching, firewalls and VPNs
- Backup, disaster recovery and business continuity solutions
- Exposure to cybersecurity frameworks and best practices.
- Experience supporting enterprise or managed services environments.
- Familiarity with ITIL or structured service management frameworks.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to service quality.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Customer-focused mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong documentation and reporting discipline.
Desirable Certifications
- Microsoft certifications, such as Azure Administrator or Windows Server.
- VMware certification, such as VCP or equivalent.
- Cisco certification, such as CCNA or CCNP, or equivalent networking certification.
- Fortinet or other recognised security vendor certifications.
